Mindset and effort during a self-adapted arithmetic task: Variable- and person-oriented approaches

چکیده

Most of the literature on relation between mindset and effort depends subjective self-reports, which may not reliably capture actual investment effort. In current study we (1) operationalized mental as chosen executed difficulty level in a self-adapted arithmetic task, (2) combined variable-oriented person-oriented analytic approaches, with latter allowing us to explore qualitatively different profiles investment. First-year Dutch high-school students (n = 299; aged 11–14 yrs) chose levels problems 20 rounds. Linear Mixed Modeling (variable-oriented approach) Latent-Profile Analysis (person-oriented were used associations mindset, errors, gender, school achievement (standardized test, math grades) explored. For male students, affected their choices independently while for female only played role when they experienced setback errors. Only males, mediated standardized scores. Additionally, identified five profiles: Avoiders, Exploring challengers, (3) Challengers, (4) Explorers (5) Steady. Two more growth-oriented (2 3), two fixed-oriented (1 5). This adds by demonstrating gender-moderated an objective measure effort, but also important nuances indicated individual differences strategies.

Self-Adapted Multi-Task Clustering

Multi-task clustering improves the clustering performance of each task by transferring knowledge across related tasks. Most existing multi-task clustering methods are based on the ideal assumption that the tasks are completely related. However, in many real applications, the tasks are usually partially related, and brute-force transfer may cause negative effect which degrades the clustering per...

Two different approaches to the affective profiles model: median splits (variable-oriented) and cluster analysis (person-oriented)

Background. The notion of the affective system as being composed of two dimensions led Archer and colleagues to the development of the affective profiles model. The model consists of four different profiles based on combinations of individuals' experience of high/low positive and negative affect: self-fulfilling, low affective, high affective, and self-destructive. During the past 10 years, an ...

The Structure of Character Strengths: Variable- and Person-Centered Approaches

This article examines the structure of character strengths (Peterson and Seligman, 2004) following both variable-centered and person-centered approaches. We used the International Personality Item Pool-Values in Action (IPIP-VIA) questionnaire. The IPIP-VIA measures 24 character strengths and consists of 213 direct and reversed items. The present study was conducted in a heterogeneous group of ...
